Undines are the cells of the life blood of the blessed womb of Ocean Mother. They are the currents, the bubbles, the waves, the foam, the ebb and the flow of the sacred element of water. Water is the element of the West. It heals, it feels, it sees, it dares. It represents the liquid state of matter, and the undines are its movers, guardians, champions, and rulers. 

The Undinic Sisterhood is an order and tradition of witchcraft founded in 2014 by Lady Stella Maris, descendent of Lady Arachnis, who descends from Lady Unise, who descends from Lady Theos, who descends from Lady Rowan, who descends from Lady Olwen, initiated by the founder of modern religious witchcraft: Gerald Brosseau Gardner. His religion and all descended religious traditions thereof is commonly referred to today as Wicca. 

Wicca is a religion founded in mid-20th century England. Its exact date of foundation is not established as it was understood as a continuation of a mysterious line of religious witchcraft practice that has an unknown foundational date, sometimes suggesting that it’s an unbroken line dating back to the stone age. While the practice of which has never been confirmed predating Gardner, it’s widely accepted that he was initiated into the New Forest Coven in 1939, where he was taught the ways of the Witch. 

As the coven began to fade, Gardner took all the available text and information to manifest his own unique creation of witchcraft taking inspiration from his life experience which included his education in India as a child as well as his proclivities and involvement in various occult practices. He was a member of the Rosicrusians, reformed Free Masons, and the Ordo Templi Orientis. Wicca became a conglomeration of romanticism, modern paganism, theosophy (a combining of western and eastern faiths), Victorian Occultism, and mysticism, which were all the bindings that held together a mysterious long line of paganistic practices. 

Wicca is a duothestic religion involving the worship of the Moon Goddess and The Horned God: the divine couple that guides the Earth in a dance of birth, life, death, and resurrection. Sometimes referred to as a fertility cult, the seasonal changes and the cycle of life are observed within The Wheel of the Year: 8 individual festivals that mark the beginning and apex of the four seasons. Not only are these festivals a celebration of seasonal changes, but they map out the lives and experiences of The Goddess and The God. These festivals are called Sabbats.

Another important monthly ritual is held during the Full Moon that is called an esbat. These rituals are where magic and divination are performed as well as a sacred ritual performed by the High Priestess called Drawing Down the Moon which is the invoking of the Spirit of the Goddess where She speaks through her to convey messages and guidance. 

All rituals are performed in a sacred space that is cleansed and built by the coven: the circle. The four cardinal directions are called which each represent one of the four elements beginning in the East (Air), then to the South (Fire), the West (Water), then finally the North (Earth). At these invocations, the elementals of their respective directions are called: Sylphs, Salamanders, Undines, and Gnomes. The circle is then cast by the High Priestess creating a boundary between the physical world and the spiritual in order to contain the magical works and to restrict unwanted energies. These energies are kept at bay by the Mighty Ones: sacred watchers and guardians that are invoked at each direction after the circle has been cast. 

This is where traditions of Wicca and the Undinic Sisterhood split: the only element that is invoked during Undinic Sisterhood rituals is water. Wicca’s foundation and sacred space is upheld by the four elements and states of matter: gas, liquid, solid, and plasma while the Undinic Sisterhood is an exploration solely sought through the state of liquid: the intangible, the mystical, the movement of the immaterial. There is no solid ground to place your feet, no boundaries to protect. Instead of a circle being cast, a maelstrom is set into motion, not to protect, but to draw we, the Undinic Witches, down into Her sacred womb. That is why water represents one pier of the witch’s pyramid: to dare. There is no safety and no refuge. As Undinic Witches, we ebb and flow where the water takes us. We surrender control to Mighty Ocean Mother.
